Proteus Reptile Trust

We share our site with Proteus Reptile Trust, our sister sanctuary. Our founders established this charity in 1991, many years before Brockswood. It remains operational today and is dedicated to rescue, rehabilitating, and rehoming of sick, injured, and unwanted reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates nationwide.

Proteus frequently takes in animals that have been subjected to cruelty and neglect. These animals range from those with terrible burns and injuries to those found abandoned in bins like unwanted throwaway items. With expert care, veterinary treatment, and patience, many of these animals go on to become healthy, happy creatures, ready to find their new forever home. Unfortunately, some of these animals have endured too much suffering and will live long-term at the centre, receiving love and care for the rest of their lives.

Like us, Proteus receives no outside funding and relies on the generous donations of people like you to continue their vital work with these often overlooked animals. At any given time, they provide care for up to 350 reptiles, from tiny geckos to large monitors, from corn snakes to giant pythons, and everything in between.

Due to the very busy nature of their work, the Proteus Re-homing Centre is currently open by appointment only. Please get in touch with the Proteus team to schedule an appointment.

Re-homing Centre

There are so many reptiles in the world looking for a home - please consider adopting your new scaly friend instead of buying from a pet shop. Proteus has a large variety of species of all shapes and sizes, suitable for both beginners and the more experienced keeper. These wonderful animals are all looking for a happy home, where they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

Visit the re-homing centre (open by appointment) and chat with the knowledgeable team. Meet some of the different species and see what would be best for you. You will be guided through the re-homing process and receive as much advice as you would like along the way.

Boarding Facility

Let the experts at Proteus take care of your much-loved friend while you are away! All profits from boarding go straight back into the care of reptiles in need, such as important veterinary treatment, and the high running costs of caring for so many animals in need, so you can go on holiday with a smile, knowing that your pets are safe and you are helping others in need too!

The rescue's boarding room is safe, completely secure, and can cater for a wide variety of different species and sizes

Education

Proteus was founded at the height of the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, when people were rushing out to buy pet turtles and often keeping them very badly, knowing almost nothing about the species and their needs - a trait that sadly didn't end in the '80s.  Proteus provide education and advice to reptile keepers so that these animals are kept properly.

Proteus provide work experience placements for students wanting to learn more about these wonderful animals, and can cater for school/college groups. They have also provided lectures for veterinary university students.

They also run biannual Tortoise health check sessions in the Brockswood classroom, so do look out for those if you have pet tortoises!
