Callum was once a wild pony, happily roaming the Welsh hills. Sadly he was caught up by people who thought they could sell him for a good price, and when nobody bought him, he was sent off to slaughter. Thankfully the man transporting Callum and his brother was passing near us and asked if we would take them in instead!

Unfortunately, his brother suffered from a serious heart problem and is sadly no longer with us, but Callum has come on leaps and bounds since moving in with us. Now in his teens, he has been with us for so long that we just can't imagine Brockswood without him now!

Callum now lives with his best friend, Duke the Donkey. After losing his paddock pal, Jess. Duke started to make friends with Callum over the fence, and so we attempted an introduction - it was an instant friendship and the boys have been inseparable ever since! An unlikely but very happy friendship.

Abby and Anna came to us in 2013 from an animal testing facility. They are not biological sisters but have been together all their lives. Both girls were used as test subjects to test the use of horse vaccines.

Animal test subjects are only allowed to be used for a certain amount of time before they have to be ‘retired’. We were asked to take them when they were less than a year old. Sadly most test subjects are not so lucky.

Due to their rough start in life, they can still be quite nervous around people. They have come on so well with lots of love and patience from us, but sadly still do not like being touched and don’t trust people they don’t know. They are lovely girls and love spending time next to Callum and Duke, who like to flirt and show off for them!

Leo was found tied up and abandoned after a horse market. It is thought that after he was not sold, his owner simply didn't want him and just left him behind.

One of our sanctuary Directors stepped in and secured him a Forever Home at Brockswood, where he would join Molly, another rescued Shetland pony. Leo and Molly became the best of friends; an inseparable pair for many years until we sadly lost our beautiful Molly.

Although we have tried to introduce Leo to other ponies since it seems his heart lies with Molly and he has never got on as well with another. Abby and Anna have taken an interest in this handsome boy, however, and he has recently returned the interest, so we have our fingers crossed that there is hope for friendship yet!
